The American Clock

Okay, so I finally managed to watch "The American Clock".
For those of you who don't know the story, it's a film based on a play of the same title by Arthur Miller that depicts the lives of several characters during the time of the Great Depression in America during the 1930s.
I'm not a particular fan of Arthur Miller. Having to suffer through hours of interpreting "Death of a Salesman" with a group of people that are not even able to form one correct English sentence will do that to you Wink But I was pleasantly surprised by the movie.
Mary plays Rose Baumler, whose husband loses all his fortunes in the stock market crash. As a result, her family has to downgrade from their Park Avenue lifestyle. Rose keeps the family going by pawning her jewellery for as long as she can. Mary even sings and - damn - she's got a beautiful voice!

What bugged me though, was the performance by Kelly Preston. Her facial expressions are really frozen, imo, and the way of talking that she adopts sounds really fake.

Two fun things: Rose's son is called "Lee". And according to the Australian DVD cover Mary changed her name to "McDowell".

There are two clips from the movie on youtube:
